I like the new Timeline on Facebook, but I have to say, I got the urge to streamline this week.
Between emails, DMs on Twitter and private messages on my Facebook personal profile, it was becoming a lot to keep track of!
So, I decided to turn off messages on my Facebook page. I'm not sayin' I'll keep them off forever, but for the time being, my need for less clutter is alleviated.
By the way, this has nothing to do with how I feel about you all. I genuinely love hearing from you all, I just confuse myself by having to check so many places!
How to turn off Facebook page messages
First, click the down arrow next to your Manage link at the top of your Admin panel. (If your admin panel isn't showing like mine is below, click the "Admin Panel" button at the top right of your screen to unhide it.)

Once you click on "Edit Page" you should be taken directly to the "Manage Permissions" tab (if not, just select it). To turn off messages, simply uncheck the box next to "Show 'Message' button on [Your Page Name]" and save your changes.
Easy peasy!

I think this is a great idea — I always forget about messages in my Facebook inbox and then people think I'm ignoring them! I wish I could leave a message, though, to tell people to email me instead, since I mostly use Facebook for staying in touch with friends and family, and I'm not sure I want to cut those off without redirecting them. I'm thinking about it, though…
I forget about them too, that's one of the reasons I though I needed to do something. Good point about making sure they know how to contact you. Maybe in your About section? Hmmm, will have to ponder the possibilities…
Hmmm, you just removed one of my major reasons for not setting up a FB page for my blog/etsy shop. My hubby has one for his business & I didn't realize messages were optional. Right now my Facebook link on my blog sends people to my personal profile where I have subscribe to public updates enabled, but only friends can message me. (Not because I want to appear unapproachable, but because of an issue I had with an over-the-line friend of a friend in the past) What to do, what to do….
There are a couple other options for letting people e-mail you. I am talking about a business page, not personal here.
On a business page there is a link called about where you can list a phone number or email address. It is located to the left side of the screen right under your profile picture.
A second option is a thing called contact me. It created a tab on my facebook page so people can contact me. They fill out a form and it goes to my email address.
Great idea to turn off the contact through facebook option and keep all contacts in one place. So much to do and so little time.
Thanks for this article. I just turned off the message option of my facebook pages
You're welcome, Rafi!
Hi Amy,
I need some help. My Admin Panel button is hidden and I cannot get into my Admin Panel to make some changes. No links are showing to unhide anywhere.
Can you help me?
Here is my Fan Page I am still working on…

Thank you for your help.
Hmmm…strange. Not sure what to tell ya. Did you check Facebook help? The link is at the very bottom of your FB page.
Your answer is consistent with FB help. My problem is I don't have an Admin Button at the top right of my page nor do I have the "date" button that FB talks about. My only date is in Windows time display at the bottom right. Could you help?
Richard, is your Admin Panel hidden? In that case, look for the "Show" button at the top of your page. Not sure what you mean by the "date" button??
