Handy Tool: Save Things to Read Later

Does your browser get clogged with tabs, full of posts and articles you want to read later? And somehow you think if you just leave those tabs open you'll get to them eventually? Yeah, me too.

Mostly it just creates a mess, right? And by the end of the day, I usually am so tired of looking at them, I just close 'em anyway. Not very helpful.

I love this Google Chrome Extension called Read Later Fast (also available for Firefox). Watch this:

Can't see the video? Watch it here.

Video Notes:

  1. Install Google Chrome if you haven't already.
  2. Install Read Later Fast (Chrome Extension).
  3. When you're browsing the web and come across something you'd like to read later, simply right-click (control-click on a Mac) and select the "Read Later" option from the menu. You should briefly see "Page Saved" at the top of the page.
  4. When you've got some time to read, open a new tab button in Chrome (indicated by the "+" sign next to your last open tab or from your File menu) and then click the Read Later Fast icon in that new tab.
  5. Read at your leisure! You can read online or offline, archive, delete items, scroll through.

Save to read later

So tell me. Do you have a browser tab habit too? :)

P.S. This post is part of the Works for Me Wednesday link-up. Speaking of link-ups, have you read what I think is the biggest blog carnival mistake?

  1. Umm…I admit my tab problem. I currently have 18 tabs open. Drives my husband crazy, but I like my tabs.

  2. Love this already, thanks for sharing. When I read your post in my reader it was one of 30 tabs open!

  3. Hi my name is Sandi and I have a Tab habit. I am really excited about trying this! I usually leave tabs open just to remind me that there was something I wanted to read. This is going to keep my 'puter uncluttered!! Thank you for sharing this!

  4. Amy, this is brilliant! Yet another reaon to add to my list of why I love Chrome. All the extensions and add-ins available allow for amazing personalization. My favorite aspect of this extension is the ability to scroll through the tabs as if browsing a gallery. It's like creating your own personalized magazine! Never again will I clog up my Evernote with all my "read later" tabs. Thank you, Amy!

  5. I only have 39 tabs open in Chrome right now. That's not too bad, right? ;)

THANK YOU for this article! I'm installing it now!

  6. Thanks for the tip, Amy! I just installed it for Firefox, and am anxious to try it out. By the way, absolutely loved hearing your little one in the background! :) Thanks for "keeping it real!"

  7. I have the Read Later extension for Firefox and it works great. Like you though, I have so many sites saved, I don't know if I'll ever get to read them all. :)

  8. I'm going to need to do this!!! I'm the same way with tabs. . .and get nervous when I see one of the kids on the computer. . .afraid they are going to close them all!

  9. Jennifer Maassen :

Thank you, Amy! My tab-obsessed husband could use that one, too.

  10. Love it! Thank you!

  11. Thanks for the helpful tip, my tabs were like 18 across. I just installed it, thanks.

  12. Thanks Amy. Do I have to have the Diigo.com tool as well to use this? Do you know if it is a secure site?

  13. Thank you!!! I totally have this problem. Pinterest saved me from creating 8,000 folders and links to creative projects I want to try but isn't a solution to all the articles my friends post on Facebook or that I come across in my own spare time and want to read later. This is great, I'm eager to use it.

  14. Thank YOU!
While I don't seem to have as big a problem as some of the ladies here, I find myself keeping tabs open to read later and then when I eventually have to restart or shut down the computer… they are gone never to be found again
Maybe my work will be accomplished a little faster now that I am secure knowing that I can come back a read at my leisure. Rats! I'll have to find some other avoidance device.

  15. Steph :

This is a GREAT tip. It's something I had no idea existed, but will now use 10 times per day. Thanks for the info!

  16. I have been dying to read this since your teaser yesterday! Thanks for the great tip!!!

  17. oooh I LOVE this. I have the same ISSUE!! I don't know what I ever did before tabs!

  18. Okay, I love this! Fantastic tip. It works the same way for Firefox, too.

  19. Amy :

I just want to say, I am so glad I'm not the only one! :)

  20. Gena :

Wow! That's great! I wish there was a way to do that with my iPad, though. Any ideas?

  21. I'm going to go download this and check it out now. Today is a slow tab day — only 10 open. But I routinely have 20+ open :) Funny enough, even with only those 10 open, your site is two of them!
    Thanks for sharing!

  22. Wow – and I thought I was the only one that kept so many tabs open. Now my husband will stop telling me that I need to close all my windows and will avoid him coming behind me and closing them all for me ;) Thank you sooooo much!!!

  23. Great post. I've learnt something new today. Thanks for sharing Amy!

  24. I totally have a tab problem! I'm going to try Read Later Fast. Thanks!

    Shannon

  25. I've been on your site for all of 10minutes and I've already learned 3 new things. I think I love you.

I currently have 6 tabs open but I just went through and bookmarked a bunch that I know I'll never get to because my bookmarks are now a mess. THANK YOU for this.

  26. I have the same problem and have started to e-mail the address to myself with the topic in the subject line. This helps me organize them a bit. I had to smile when you got to the part that showed all the articles you have stored to read eventually – looks familiar. :)
