How to Use Facebook's "View As" Tool

It's hard to escape all the Facebook changes as of late. Privacy is (as usual and understandably so) a concern for many. A lot of people have had a hard time navigating the changes and making sure their settings are as they'd like.

You can change your privacy settings by clicking the down arrow in your top navbar and selecting "Privacy Settings" like so:

But if you're like me, it's still hard to know exactly how all those various privacy settings actually look to the outsider, right?

The "View As" tool

Do you know about the "View As" tool? It allows you to see what your profile looks like to a specific friend, or to the public. I used it multiple times as I was setting up my new Timeline to make sure only the information I wanted to show up was showing up!

How to use it

It's simple. Click the down arrow next to "View Activity" and the gear icon underneath your cover photo. Select "View As…" from the dropdown:

Next, look at the very top of the screen and you'll see a box that allows you to enter the name of a specific friend, or, click the link that says "Public" to see how your profile looks to everyone.

  1. This is very helpful. Thank you! Yes, privacy is definitely a big concern, I think especially for parents.

  2. How did you get your profile pic to span the top of the page?

    • Amy :

Hey Dan, that's called the "Cover" in your Timeline. So, login to FB and click on your name in the top right corner. Hover over the space at the top of your Timeline. You should see the option to change your "cover" when doing so. Does that help?

  3. As a new blogger, I find SO much of your posts helpful – including this one. Thanks so much for all of the great info!

  4. Love this feature . . . although I've seen it before, I never *really* looked at what the "public" could see on my personal FB page until re-reading your post this morning. Seems that questions answered and cover photos are ALWAYS public and their is no way to change this. I was surprised, though, that my "wall photos" album is also coming up as viewable by the public? The settings claim you can set privacy for each photo individually, but even after making sure all of them were set to "friends only" the album itself is still viewable. Hmm . . .

Hmmm…well, I did make this video a while ago and we all know how things change on FB. LOL. Maybe I'll get a chance to look into it more at some point, but if you figure it out, let us know!
