Tool for Screenshots: Awesome Screenshot

how to take a screenshotIf you want to take a screenshot, there are a lot of tools you can use. I wrote about two in How to Take a Screenshot.

I've been experimenting with a Google Chrome Extension that is really working out quite nicely for quick and simple screenshots. It's called Awesome Screenshot and if you're using Chrome, you can get the extension here. (They also have versions for Firefox and Safari that you can download on their home page.)

Two things I especially love about it

  1. It's right in my browser so it's easily accessible.
  2. It has a blur tool that makes it simple to hide sensitive information.

You don't have options for things like font size changes or image size changes (which I love about Skitch), but still, it's super handy for something quick.

Here's a quick video about it:

What about you? Got any screenshot tips or tools?

  1. I use the Screen Capture by Google extension in Chrome – it's got four different capture options, highlight, redact (with solid black or blur), text and line options, and it sits nicely in my browser by the other extensions I use often.

What's the difference between that one and this one?

  2. Amy, thank you for sharing this. I had it on my "to learn" list!

  3. Thanks for sharing this post. I installed it to use on google and am going to look for the one on firefox.

  4. For work I use a tool called FastStone Capture. I really like it because I can capture just what I need and can save the image to a file right away.

  5. Hmm, I wonder if Firefox has any such tool? Never knew these existed, I just use the one on my keyboard. :)

  6. At work, I use SnagIt alot. I also use the regular Alt+Print Screen, but use Adobe PhotoShop Elements or Adobe Fireworks to manipulate it as needed.

I am sharing my award with you and I am a faithful follower of you and your helpful tips. Blessings sent from me to you.

  8. I use Pixlr Grabber which I love, however on some sites it doesn't quite work right, so I am looking for alternatives. I just looked up Awesome Screenshot for Firefox but it's not yet available for the latest Firefox version which I'm on. I may switch over to Chrome at some point but don't know much about it yet. Thanks as always for the 'awesome' tips!

  9. I am not a big fan of too many plug-ins. Plus why not just do this:

    1) Hit the Prt Scr button on your keyboard
    2) Open ANY photo edit software and go to Edit and Paste new image.

You are done and can have the whole page to work with and crop whatever.
I also love the FREE photo edit software paint.net that can be found here:

  10. Hi Amy,
Thanks for the screenshot tool video. I am using Greenshot which is quite easy as i am practiced to use "Print Screen" key, it also has option to fade the areas of captured image.

  11. Thank you! I've been looking for something like this. I've been using the window "snipping tool" and photoshop, but this eliminate a few steps which is HUGE for me since I create a lot of training "pictorials." Thanks again for another great resource Amy!

  12. Awesome Amy! Thank you so much, I have been wondering how to do this for a long time. Thanks!

  13. I used this for the first time today. Your site is continually such a great resource for me. Thanks Amy!
