In my last post, I gave you some suggestions about how to respond to people who have republished your content on their site.
One way to keep tabs on who's talking about you is to set up Google Alerts.
Here's how to do it:
Can't see the video? Watch it here.
Video Notes:
- Sign in to Google (same login as your Gmail. Don't have Gmail? You're missin' out! Here's how to get a Gmail account.). You don't have to sign in for Google Alerts, but it's a bit more convenient to do so.
- Go to google.com/alerts.
- Enter in the term you want alerts for. (Don't forget to put your term in quotation marks to get more relevant and specific results.)
- Choose your parameters for your alerts.
- That's it! Just watch for your alerts!

Yup! I discovered this awhile ago. The other advantage is I can keep tabs to make sure no one else is using my blog's name. I actually discovered another blogger using my blog name through Google Alerts. No idea how to contact her – there's no contact form and she's not responded to my comments….maybe you can address this topic for me in another post some time…I digress…
Needless to say, if you have a trademark or just care to know if someone starts using your blog's name in some way, this is another reason to sign up for Google Alerts!
This is on of the best tools we use! As for contacting someone go to whois.com and you can find their info. If it's not there contact their ISP and let them know they are using your stuff.
I am a little confused. I can see how this would work with your blog title or something, but how do you utilize this for every blog post? Do you go back each blog post in set up an alert for key words in your blog?
Yeah, you wouldn't do it for every blog post, just things like your blog name, your domain name, your own name, perhaps your Twitter handle, etc.
…and I just set up a google alert too. Thanks for your wonderful resource!
Hi Amy,
Thanks for the how-to video on Google Alerts. I've just created a few.
I haven't had any of my blog content republished, or at least I don't think so, but a number of sites have embedded my YouTube videos. I know that I can turn off this option, but I generally don't mind when others embed them since they are videos, so there's no question who created them. However, in one instance, the embeder listed my video under an unflattering title. I wasn't crazy about that, but I ended up posting a comment on the site, but I let it go after that.
