How to Make Screenshots and Clip Quotes Easily

Several people have asked me how to take a screenshot. For Mac users, I HIGHLY recommend Skitch. For PC users, try the Snipping Tool.

But if neither of those suit your fancy (how in the world could you not love Skitch?!?!), here's another quick and easy option called clp.ly:

How to install clp.ly in your browser toolbar

Register for a free account first.

Find the bookmarklet by clicking "Get clp.ly" at the top of your page. See that tab up there at the top? (Image courtesy of clp.ly :) ):

Clipped from: clp.ly (share this clip)

Then just drag the red "Clip with clp.ly" (on the left under "Firefox, Chrome, and Safari") to your bookmarks toolbar.

When you're ready to take a screenshot of a webpage you're browsing, just click the bookmarklet.

How to insert a clp.ly screenshot into your post for use

Once you click the "Clip with clp.ly" link in your bookmarks toolbar, you get a screen like this (image courtesy of Skitch :) ):

How to clip with clp.ly

Drag the box on the left (with the up and down arrow) to the point on the page you want to capture.

Copy the HTML on the right and then paste that HTML into your post (make sure you're using the HTML tab and not the Visual!).

Pretty easy really.

Limitations of clp.ly

For screenshots, you don't have the ability to clip only a portion of the page left to right, you can only choose a full-width section. In other words, if I only wanted to clip the right half of a page, I can't do that.

I'm also not sure why one would use clp.ly to copy quotes unless you need to be able to track it (not sure why I would want to do that — maybe I'm missing something) or cite it automatically, which I guess could be handy if you aren't citing it elsewhere in your post.

But if all you want is a to be able to include a screenshot in your post simply by pasting in some HTLM, I think clp.ly could work!

How do you take screenshots? Have you tried clp.ly?

  1. THANK YOU. I've been looking for this information. The sites that I found just weren't good enough.

  2. I will definitely check out skitch, but for a MAC, I just use SHIFT/COMMAND/4 for screenshots. Works fine for me.

    • Amy :

I used to use the Mac keyboard shortcut too, but oh, Skitch is fun, fun, fun! Add text, arrows and resize photos by simply clicking & dragging plus tons more!

I use jing on my pc – it's a little gadget that sits at the top of your screen and gives you lots of options for creating screenshots, including writing on them and jing hosts the images for you too…

  6. Amy, thanks for the post! I'm the Community Manager over at clp.ly. I got the use clp.ly before I even started working there. I loved it immediately. One of the ways I use clp.ly is for my reviews. I cover gaming news, products and releases and found that it's a more visually compelling way to link things in a post.

Here is one of the reviews I wrote: http://clp.ly/114LQ -I use a clip to link to the apple store for the game I reviewed.

I'd love to hear any feedback you or your readers have about clp.ly!
