For those of you who have mentioned you enjoy cooking (and even for those of you who might not enjoy it but have to do it for your family anyway), here's an interesting money-making idea:
I decided I would hire someone to purchase food while they were shopping, come to my place, cook and wash dishes. Assuming they are a better cook than I am, they should be able to cook faster than I can. Also, since they could purchase ingredient while shopping for themselves anyway, it should add relatively little time to their shopping trips. I decided this was the path I was going to take – hire someone to cook for me.
Go read the full story on Sid Savara's blog, but instead of looking at it from Sid's point of view, think of how it might work for you as the person doing the cooking. (And if the coming over and doing dishes part doesn't set well with you, don't worry, that all got worked out.)
It seems to me this would work best in a city with lots of working professionals or possibly in a college town (although you'd have to investigate that one). But think of how this woman answered an ad on Craigslist and now she's making $60 a week for probably not much extra work on her part (other than a short drive) since she's cooking or her family anyway. Smart!

This is an amazing idea. I love to cook and cook meals for my family on average about 6 nights a week. I do meal planning, coupon shopping etc and really enjoy it! I have been toying with an idea of a meal delivery service aimed at single professionals in the area (we live in Northern NJ so there are many commuters into NYC and such) but the logistics just seem so crazy! Maybe this would be a good way for me to start. If I could find one or two people to start with (advertising on Craigslist or whatever) then I could learn the ropes and work out the logistics on a much smaller scale. Thanks so much for posting this! I can not wait to show my husband who is so sick of me talking about this idea nonstop (he probably thinks I am a little crazy too lol)
That's awesome — I hope it works out!!
Our babysitter cooks for a recent college grad who has to be on a gluten-free diet. People who cannot eat gluten cannot rely on convenience foods, and many restaurants with "gluten-free" menus aren't much help because other foods in their kitchens contaminate the supposed-to-be-gluten-free food. If you're willing to put in the work to cook gluten-free, this could be a great chance to earn some money!
Good point! Specializing would be a great way to go too!!
Amy,
I went to Sid's site, per your recommendation (you always have such great nuggets of advice AND LINKS) and loved this article. I'm not interested in the cooking part (I'm terrible), but would love to hire out tasks that I don't enjoy/am not good at. Awesome article. Thank you for sharing!!
I know that my cousin did this for a vegan couple when she was in culinary school. It was a win/win. She gained experience with vegan cooking and the busy couple had great meals to eat. I think that she found the couple on Craigslist.
