Making Gmail's Rich-Text Signature Work

We've talked about signatures in Gmail recently — first using add-ons and then using Gmail's rich-text feature.

Since those posts, I've gotten some questions and have noticed a few things about using the rich-text feature:

1. Disable the add-ons

If you are switching from using the add-ons mentioned previously to the using Gmail's rich-text feature, make sure you first disable the add-ons.

Disable in Firefox by going to Tools (at the very top of your screen)–>Add-ons and click "Disable" next to Blank Canvas or WiseStamp.

Disable in Chrome by going to Window–>Extensions and "Disable."

2. Enable Gmail Labs Signature Tweaks

If you've set up a Gmail sig and it's putting your signature at the very bottom of your emails (like after the quoted text in a reply), enable the Signature Tweaks lab. This will move your signature up to right below your message.

To enable Signature Tweaks, in Gmail go to Settings–>Labs and then enable

Gmail signature settings

Hope that helps!

Are you using Gmail's rich-text signature? How's it working for ya?

  1. Hi Amy
I don't have signature tweeks in my labs tab. I'm on a PC, is that why?

  2. Hi,

I was battling to see the wysiwyg toolbar in the sig area. I then realised that I had to turn on rich text editing on the email body area and it will enable this option in the sig area. Hope this helps.

  3. Kate :

My gmail signature only gives me the Plain Text option. How can I get the rich text?

  4. Scott Steensen :

I am using IE9, I am using rich text formatting and when I try to send an email or reply to someone it won't send it keeps giving me a "send error" in red letters. The only way I can find to get it to send is to change it from rich text to plain text. However I then loose links, pictures and other content that I'm trying to send. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • Amy :

Oh man, that's frustrating! Hmmm…I'm not sure I'm much help here since IE makes me crazy and I gave up on it years ago. Have you thought of switching browsers to Chrome?
