A lot of people have asked me how to make a photo collage now that Picnik is no longer working.
I previously wrote about some alternatives to Picnik, but here is another one.
Alex from iPiccy emailed me to let me know about the new collage tool they added recently.
Update: PicMonkey is another online app that lets you make collages as well.
Here's how it works:
Can't see the video? Watch it here.
Video Notes:
- Go to iPiccy.com and click "Start Editing."
- "Enable Local Storage" if you haven't already (just follow the prompts for Windows or Mac).
- Upload your photos by clicking "Upload Photo."
- Click the "Create New Collage" tab at the top of the page which looks like 4 colored squares.
- Choose your collage layout on the left.
- Add your photos using the "Add Photos" button. Click and drag them from square to square to arrange them and within the squares to highlight various parts of each photo.
- Adjust the border color (just click the black square), thickness, corner roundness etc. above the layout options.
- Click "Done" on the right.
- Save your file using the Save tab which has a disk icon on it. (If you opted for a transparent background, make sure you save your image as a PNG).
- Done!

Thanks – I was scrambling today to finish my Picnik to-do list, so it helps to know there are other options.
Amy, Thank you for the video. How did you put the banner across the collage?
Jan
I was curious about that too??
Ah, that I did at the end in GIMP. LOL, I didn't even think about the fact that anyone would be curious about that. I was just making it Pinterest-worthy.
Maybe I'll tuck that away as another tutorial in the future.
Please do! I am interested in how to do this.
I'm interested in this, too!
I would love to know this also. Thank you for all your previous tutes. They are very very handy.
Another easy way to make a banner like that, or just watermark is to use impressions, just FYI
This is the best alternative to Picnik I have seen so far. Very similar tools but LOTS more extras. Thanks so much!
This is nice. It's really good we have some alternatives.
Thanks for the great post, Amy!
I think everyone who is sad over losing Picnik will be THRILLED to know that the original Picnik engineers have gotten together and started another photo editing website that's almost EXACTLY like Picnik (sans the same old design)! It's called PicMonkey.com
and it has the functions that we love from Picnik (and then some!) in the same, easy-to-work-with style. The design takes a little bit to get used to but it's WAAAY faster than Picnik and has better fonts (which I love!) too!! Everything's free for now (it will end up with premium features like Picnik had) and really, really fun to use. I LOVE PicMonkey!! Just thought I'd share it with you all.
Thanks Sharon. Last I heard, the collage feature wasn't up and running on PicMonkey. Is it now available?
It looks like they don't have collage up right now but they DO have a feature under the stickers/overlay section where you can add multiple photos – say, if you have a white blank photo you can drag as many other photos as you want onto it. I love Picasa for collages, personally, so I hadn't even looked into Pic Monkey for that. I just love their amazing fonts and photo editing!
great tutorial! I have also played around with picmonkey.com and have found it to be extremely user friendly.
Thanks, Heidi. That's good to know too!
Only thing is with Picmonkey they haven't added a collage option yet
So this is fantastic info Amy
Blessings!
Thank you for this tutorial. I used Picnic all the time and was sad that they were closing. This one has many of the same features. I tried it for one photo and will continue to work with them.
THANK YOU! I've been on the lookout for a good alternative and this is PERFECT!
You are the BEST, AMy !
This is a great tutorial. How would I add some wording over the picture as you did above?
I love this. I've gotten sick and tired of trying to get Blogger to let me place my pictures wherever I want them. A couple of questions, tho, if you don't mind:
1. Did you add the banner with ipiccy or what that done as a separate step with say, pixlr?
2. I wonder if you know of a software or process that lets you make a collage like this one but lets you click and biggify each picture? Sort of like a little photo album that gets triggered when you click on one of the pictures in a collage?
Thanks for sharing this. Am a big fan!
Hi Megan. I'll be posting a tutorial explaining how to add the text. As for #2, I don't know of anything off the top of my head, but you might check out the plugins directory for something having to do with a portfolio?
Thank you so much. I was looking for something for a few days to replace Picnik. This is perfect for me.
Thank you so much for the link to iPiccy – so easy to use – love it
Thanks so much for this post, I missed the last post but on April 18th was working frantically to do all the collages I could before it was no longer available.
Just made my first one and it's easier than picnic or whatever that was. Don't miss it at all.
Yay!

This is really good. I am just learning about this stuff and you explain it so well.
Thank you.
You're welcome, Anne. Glad you stopped by!
hello Amy,
how are you? I read few of your blogs and found them really helpful. You indeed are a quality writer.
And that is a wonderful tip but i think Picasa 3(Google product) provides the best service for making collage. You already might be knowing the product but must not have tried. Its worth trying picasa's collage feature.
And since i have just started blogging and might not be knowing any nuts and bolts of blogging(however, i wrote two posts already and i am feeling good about it),I known, i am asking for too much but can you have a quick look at my post (specially second one(prostitution sorry! i don't get it)) and suggest me few of your precious advices. Would be a lifetime fuel for my blogging And can you just tell me what is more worthy! page views? or comments?
thank you, i will be around.
That is SO cool! I love it!
Yay! So glad to know there is another photo editing site out there!!!!
Thank you so much for posting this, Amy! It's very helpful to me. I'm always trying to arrange photos on my blog and they are difficult to work with. I just made 4 collages using your suggestion and directions from the post, and was able to complete them in a matter of minutes. Wow! Thanks so much.
Yay! Way to go, Brianne.
Here's a dummy question, but once I save the collage, can I then use it as a photo ina post? Not sure of all applications possible here, but really want to play with it!!
Thanks so much! You're video notes especially were more helpful and straightforward than others I've tried to use.
So glad it was helpful, Shell!
This was great – quick and easy – tx for the tips!
Thanks so much for telling us about iPiccy! I haven't been able to find a free collage option since Picnik.
Hi Amy! I love your blog. I've been learning a lot of new things from your posts and videos, and when I searched for picnik alternatives on Google this evening I was glad to see your blog post in the results
I just wanted to let everyone here know that PicMonkey now seems to have enabled the collage functionality on their site. I'll be trying it out tonight.
Man! I just wish there was a collage for 12 photos!!
I didn't notice there being a way to zoom images in and out once dropped into the collage. Is that right or am I missing something?
Hmmm…I *think* you'd have to resize them first, but I'm not sure about that…
Thank you for this! It was just what I was looking for!
This was really helpful; thanks!
You changed my life! I am so excited about blogging again! This post was especially helpful since I love to post tons of pictures but prefer to group them in like images. I could go on and on at how great this is but I've got to get to blogging!
Yay! Have fun.
Wow, another great tool to use. I just stumbled upon Picmonkey recently and have been having a blast with it, but this one has a few more interesting options on its own that I will try for sure.
I think my granddaughter had me use that picnick thing then she couldn't remember as she uses her fancy phone now. I had been doing a search and found some but didn't like the way they worked. Your video was fantastic and I'm headed to ipiccy now. I think even at my age (66) I can figure it out. Thanks a million
You can do it, Gail!
So so so helpful! First thing I clicked after my google search!! And now I'm in collage heaven (no doubt I will get super carried away and start collage-ifying everything!!! Thanks and have a great day!
You're welcome, Jon. Thanks for stopping by!
As always, you have great collection of collage making apps. thanks
