How to Change the Images for Facebook Timeline Tabs

KM asked a great question in the comments on Are You Sad to Lose Your Facebook Landing Page?

She wonders how to get the custom images for the tabs (indicated by the orange arrows here):

It's not difficult at all.

Update: First, you need to create the tabs in the first place. I use Static HTML.

Here's a video walking you through the process:

Can't see the video? Click here.

Video Notes:

  • First you'll need to create an image. A good size is 111px wide by 74 px wide. (If you're a former Picnik user, there are some alternative image editors listed here.)
  • When you're ready to install it, click the down arrow at the far right of the row of visible tabs (mine is just to the right of my Likes).
  • One you do, you'll have the option to edit your tabs. Hover over the tab you want to edit and click the pencil icon that appears in the top right corner. Select "Edit Settings" from the menu.
  • Click "Change" next to Custom Tab Image" and follow the prompts to upload.
  • Done!

Easy peasy. ;)

  1. thank you, thank you, thank you -FINALLY a way of doing this that's in ENG-LASH!! :)

  2. Just used your tutorial to make a blog button and it was excellent. Can't wait to try this! Thanks you are awesome as always. Lesley

  3. When I click on my tags, I do not have the edit option. In fact, I only have three (events, notes, and videos). Do you have any idea why? I feel like I am clearly missing something. :-)

  4. I did it, I did it – I changed an image on my FaceBook tab – thank you, Amy!!

  5. Amy, thank you for sharing. Not just sharing this, but EVERYTHING you post. I have so many of your posts marked to read and implement in my own blog, and every time I use one it is clear, concise, and easy to understand. You are such an amazing and wonderful asset in so many ways- thank you so much!

  6. Thanks Amy, I love it. Learning new things daily with Blogging with Amy!

  7. No Amy – none of the above worked for me. I am using as a page, then added static html but like kim@notconsumed, I do not get the options that you do when I go to edit settings.

  8. Thank you for the easy to follow instructions!!

  9. Amy, thanks for the great article. I have a question though. What should the graphic size be for the main large graphic at the top? Thanks.

  10. This comment does not pertain to this post – but just used your tutorial on how to make a blog button, so wanted to say THANKS Amy!

  11. Hi Amy! A lot of helpful information here, but I am still having problems. Just as Sally said, I am using Timeline as my page, and also added the static HTML option, but when I click on the edit settings button all I get is the option to add or remove the setting (aka my note tab). No option for a custom tab image. Please help!! Also, do you know I could insert a hyper-link into the text of a note on the facebook fanpage?? Thanks in advance for your time and any help!! :)

  12. How do I change the tabs images for "Videos" "Photos" tabs?

    • The photos tab is not editable. It will just show the last photo you uploaded. I believe it works the same way for any videos you upload…it will just show the last one uploaded.

  13. Okay you got me clapping again! My hubby calls it my "happy clap" instead of a "happy dance" when I figure out something new on the computer, I clap my hands together and shout!!! YEAH ME!!! This time I really should shout "Thanks Amy!" . I had to install the static HTML first, then I took my home page, copied the html for it, pasted it, and then saved, and all the info and links appeared. Then I was able to change the tab photo from the star to my own photo using your tips! Thanks so much! Now I need to tweak the font on my photo its too small!
