One Small Setting that Has Made a Big Difference

I highly recommend you experiment with the time of day FeedBurner delivers your emails to your subscribers. (Read How to Get & Optimize a FeedBurner Feed for more info.)

I've been doing so lately and I have seen remarkable differences in the number of pageviews I'm getting, depending on the time of day my subscription email is delivered — I'm talkin' like up to double the pageviews some days. Of course, there are so many variables to consider when looking at stats that it's impossible to make a direct correlation between pageviews and email deliver, but still, if there's a jump like that in my stats from day to day, I'm definitely taking note of what might have been the cause.

How to Change Your FeedBurner Email Delivery Time

  1. Sign into FeedBurner.
  2. Click on the name of your feed.
  3. Click the Publicize tab.
  4. Click "Email Subscriptions."
  5. Click "Delivery Options."
  6. Choose a time from the "Schedule Email Delivery" menu.
  7. Click "Save."

Here's a visual aid:

How to change FeedBurner Delivery Options
Currenly, I have mine set for 7:00 am -  9:00 am and it seems to be working pretty well, but I've tried all times of the day.

Here are some tips:

  1. When you reset your the time, keep it there for at least a few days and preferably a week or more. This will give you a more accurate picture of the effectiveness of a particular time.
  2. Don't assume that the default set by FeedBurner or someone else's chosen time will work for you. All blogs are different and all audiences are different. Experimentation is key.
  3. Make a note to yourself to make this an annual, semi-annual or quarterly exercise.

What about you? Have you switched your delivery options around and have you noticed a difference? What works for you?

  1. I just figured out how to change the settings a few weeks ago… I had a reader tell me that by the time they got my e-mail, many of the deals/coupons/freebies I was sharing were gone.

I changed the time from the evening to the middle of the day and have seen a positive increase in page views.

    Good advice!

  2. I changed mine from the default setting (middle of the night) to early afternoon so readers would get the morning deals the same day.

What I've noticed more than pageviews is a dramatic decrease in the number of complaints from readers that they are getting day-old deals. It's cut the time spent responding to emails!

I'd love to know what time other deal bloggers are setting.

  3. Wow! Thanks! I feel stupid! I didn't even know that I could change it or that it was sending it out that late! I just changed mine! Thanks, again! : )

  4. This is a great tip. Thanks.

Has your feedburner been erratic lately? Mine has been yo-yoing for the last month or so. Any advice?

    • Amy :

FeedBurner is notoriously fickle. Honestly, I rarely look at my subscriber numbers. Other than being able to tell advertisers how many you have, there really isn't a whole lotta reason to keep track in my opinion. If an advertiser wants to know, my suggestion is to record the number of subscribers you have over the course of a week or two and take an average.

  5. I hadn't even thought to look into that. Thanks for sharing! All of my feeds were going out really late, so I have moved them all earlier in the day (different times for different ones).

  6. Hi Amy,
This was really helpful for me since I just launched my blog today. I am wondering if you have any thoughts about the best time of day to send posts to twitter? Also, have you done any tracking of statistics on women blogging?

You might want to check out my recent post called Insights on Women and Online Blogging.

I find this fascinating, and since you have been blogging on for a while, thought you might have some unique insight.

    Great blog. I subscribed today.

  7. Great tip – it hadn't even occurred to me to think about what time the feed was being delivered. I have the entire post feed rather than an extract so I'm curious whether the page views will increase. Definitely worth trying.

  8. Thanks. I had mine set earlier, but changed it by accident awhile back to the late evening and noticed a drop off. ;)

  9. I'm sing 7-9, but I'm wondering if 9-11 would be better.

  10. Can feedburner take the place of Aweber? I have both but if I don't need to be paying for Aweber I won't.

    • Amy :

Aweber definitely gives you more control over your emails, but if all you need is that ability for people to sign up for your feed via email, yes, FeedBurner can do that (it's what I use at BWA).

      • Amy :

I should add that you can't do anything more than that with FeedBurner like email blasts, newsletters, etc. so be aware of that before you switch.

  11. Amy :

Thanks so much for the tip! I just changed mine, so we'll see how it works. With that said, does it matter what time I schedule my posts to be published? Right now, mine are published at 2am EST. Should I play around with that time as well?

  12. Tnx @ amy :) But i have one more thing to ask u 8) Is it possible to deliver feedburner mail weekly :-? Because i don't wanna send feedburner mail daily. Or do i have to use other service :(

  13. Thank you for posting how to do this. I find FeedBurner so confusing at times! But this made is so easy. I switched mine to 7-9AM as well.

  14. I've been considering this, since I myself even have trouble finding my own email newsletter every morning b/c it seems it's buried in with several other emails that come overnight. I'm going to change it to late evening, and see if that seems to improve clicks. Like some of the other commenters, I often post deals that expire that day, so it may be frustrating to readers at times to receive it the following day. Thanks for the encouragement! :)

  15. Ah I'm so glad I found this I couldn't figure out why my emails were going out in the middle of the night! Is there a similar function for delivery via RSS reader? For some reason my posts always show up much later and I would like them to show up after I post them.

  16. I tried this, but found my blog time settings didn't follow the settings of my feedburner. Now, I'm trying to get my times to match. I think that's the problem anyway. Sigh.

    • Amy :

Go to Settings –> General and make sure it's set to the right time zone (matching what you've got in FeedBurner on the Publicize –> Email Subscriptions –> Delivery Options).
