How much do "average bloggers" actually make?
I would LOVE to know some specifics as to how much these bloggers are actually making on their blogs? I really don’t mean to be nosy, but I am at a cross-roads of sorts with my blog. I can put in a TON of time, energy, and focus (and I WANT TO), but is it really worth it? I mean, should I keep my blog as mainly hobby and get a part-time job at Starbucks to help out with the bills?
My (frustrating) answer? It depends.
If there's one thing I've learned, it's that the amount one makes online is dependent on SO many factors such as:
- your niche
- how well-known you are
- how effective your networking is
- if you are fortunate enough to be recognized and linked to by well-known bloggers
- if you have outstanding content that makes people keep coming back
- if you write about topics for which there are companies willing to pay advertising
- if you have multiple income streams
- etc. etc.
The list goes on and on. Every blogger's story is different.
How much time does an income-producing blog require? A lot!
I'm going to make a broad, blanket statement here just for perspective (there are exceptions to every rule, so please take that into account). I would say, your income is proportional to the amount of time you put in.
In other words, it's not likely you'll make a full-time income writing and networking 2-4 hours a day. You could probably make a decent part-time income doing so, but getting to that point would require a good amount of blogging knowledge and experience.
How long will it take before I start making money on my blog? It'll be a while.
I always tell folks that I worked for 8 months on my blog before receiving a single check! You have to make sure you are committed and passionate about what you’re blogging about. Focus first on quality content and bringing in traffic. And if you NEED the money…like NOW? Don’t start a blog. Get a day job.
I'd say give yourself at least 6 months before you start pulling in an income. And even then, it'll most likely be very part time.
If you make money from blogging, how much do you make?
Sometimes it's helpful to hear about someone's actual experience. You know, "the numbers."
So, if you currently make money from your blog, would you mind filling us in on yours? This is not a competition, but an opportunity to help others get an idea of what to expect. We're all either there or have been there at some point.
Here are my questions:
- How old is your blog?
- What is your niche, or, what topics do you write about?
- How many pageviews do you get a month?
- What is your monthly income?
- What is/are your main income stream/s?
- How long did it take before you started making money?
- How many hours per day do you spend on your blog and blog-related activites (networking, etc.)?
- What was your turning point? Do you have a special circumstance? Did something happen which was the point at which you started seeing steady growth? Is there something about your blog that makes it not exactly "average" and therefore makes it one of the exceptions to the rule?
I'll go first:
How old is your blog? 2 1/2 months.
Niche? Blogging tips, time-management tips, how to start a blog, how to make money blogging.
Pageviews per month? Google Analytics tells me in the last 30 days (May 15, 2010 – June 14, 2010) I've received 13,149 pageviews. (This number is not normal. See special circumstance below.)
Monthly income? In the same time period (mid-May to mid-June), I've made about $500. (Again, not a normal number. See special circumstance below.) This does not include income from design/consulting which I would say resulted from my blog but is not directly related to it.
Main income streams? Affiliate sales (i.e. getting a portion of a sale for referring someone to a product or service).
How long before you made money? I blogged almost 6 years without trying to make money, but in that time I learned a whole lot so by the time I started making money, it happened within the first month.
Hours blogging (& related activities) per day? At least 4-6.
Turning point or special circumstance? Special circumstance: I blogged for almost 6 years and I made pennies per month. Making an income wasn't really my focus until I started BloggingWithAmy.com which is a culmination of what I've learned over the last 6 years and I would absolutely not have the same numbers if I had started as a new blogger. I would guesstimate that a blogger who started blogging 2 months ago would have made $0 and pageviews would be between 10 and 50 per day.
Turning point: Attending Blissdom. The networking at the conference was huge for me as was the inspiration to pursue blogging as income and to do so full steam ahead.
What do you say bloggers? Will you jump in? Here's what to do:
If you're game, copy this list of questions below, paste it into a comment and answer as many as you'd like. All I ask is that you keep it real.
