In case you missed my Facebook post about it, all the buzz today is about a new feature Facebook rolled out this week which allows people to "Subscribe" to your Personal Profile. Note that this is different than people who "Like" your Page.
Essentially it means that if you choose to enable the Subscribe feature on your Personal Profile (it doesn't happen automatically), anyone who is a subscriber of yours will be able to see your Public updates that you post on your Personal Profile.
So, I enabled the feature on my personal profile today. Now, whenever I want to post something, I choose who I want to see it (Public, Friends, Custom, etc). I do this by selecting the intended audience in the dropdown menu like so:
Now, anyone who is subscribed will see my Public updates in their News Feed.
My initial thoughts
It's only been about, oh, 2 hours since I enabled it, so I reserve the right to change my mind, but…
So far, I've heard people say they think it's a "game changer" and others who have said they think it just adds to the social media noise and confusion. We have yet to see how it all pans out and how the masses will respond I guess.
For me personally, I'm excited about it. Why? Well, you all know know me for the easy-to-implement blogging tips which I love to collect and pass on here. I like to make things easier and more efficient. I like to help others shave time off the learning curve.
The tip of the iceberg
The fact is, blogging tips are just the beginning of my tip collection! I'm a fan of any tips that make life easier and more streamlined. I'd love to share the tips I've collected, but obviously BloggingWithAmy.com is not the place to do it. I don't really want to start a whole new blog so this new Facebook subscribe feature might be just the thing. We'll see…
But if you like my simple blogging tips, I think you might like my other tips to. Wanna give it a whirl? (After subscribing, click on my Wall to see a bit of the girl behind the geek.

Here at BloggingWithAmy you'll find tips, tools & tutorials about blogging and websites. In plain English. Want to
Thanks for the heads up, Amy. I wonder if this is a response to Google+ and its circles?I thought Facebook might have to try to create something similar.
Oh yes, Twitter, Google+, Facebook…they're all trying to keep up with each other. It'll be fun to how it all goes.
This is interesting…does this mean establishing a business page on FB is redundant?
No, not if you blog by a different name.
Hi I need help…. I was wondering why I have a subscriptions tab in the left side of my profile… why cant I delete it … I dont want it there…..
You must have accidentally enabled subscribers. Click the down arrow to the right of your "Home" link in your top navbar. Click "Privacy Settings" and then click "Edit Settings" next to "How You Connect." A little window will pop up and at the very top of that window, click on the link that says "Subscribers tab." Once you're on your Subscribers page, click the "Settings" button in the top right of the screen and you'll see the option to turn "Off" subscribers. Click "OK." Hope that helps!
I am so conflicted. I love to read blogs, toy with the idea of writing a blog but am pretty shy; ya know the type that has panic attacks going to back- to- school night because of the all the people you see or those you are afraid to see. My conflict is can a non-social person (or socially challenged person) become a successful blogger in your opinion?
Oh yes, absolutely!
Thank you for such a quick respone. I really enjoy your blog. I am trying to learn as much as I can before jumping into the mix and find your tips and info very valuable.
I am not really technology avers however the Google – FB banter leaves me behind the curve. Things change fast, I am having a hard time keeping up (hence I read your tips hoping to cut some time on the learning curve). As you very much described the discrepancy between ppl liking a page and ppl actually being active or even just re-visiting a page is great. I wonder if it hadn't been better to let folks like a page (for support of organizations, friends) but then separately subscribe to their content if the 'likers' find it useful. It does up the ante to provide good content….
Can never go wrong with great content, that's for sure!
