If you use YouTube to post videos, make sure you're leaving a clickable link to your blog in the first part of your video description. It's a great way to drive traffic to your blog from your videos.
Update: This tip was originally published in April 2011, but I'd like to refine it because, well, I want you all to learn from my mistake. First, have a look at the original video…
Can't see the video? Watch it here.
So I'd like to add that including your entire URL is good (like I did in the video), but adding the entire permalink of the particular blog post in which you post the video is better.
I know, duh, right? Not sure what I was thinking (or wasn't thinking, lol). But anyway, better late than never…
So, here's what I should have done
Instead of simply adding this to my video description:
http://BloggingWithAmy.com
I really should have added this:
http://BloggingWithAmy.com/drive-more-traffic-to-your-site-from-youtube-an-easy-tip/
The latter is the URL for this specific blog post where I feature the video in the first place. That way, if anyone wants to reference this post, they'll be taken directly here, not just to my home page.
So, don't do what I did. Be smarter. ![]()
Now to go back and edit all my videos…
Video Notes:
- Include your entire post URL in your YouTube video description including the "http://" (which makes it clickable).
- Make sure to do so within the first 75 characters (or so) to make sure it shows up on the first line.
- Here's the direct link to my Swagbucks how-to video if you're interested in this way to earn online.

Great tip!
I just went back and added my URL on my latest videos, thanks to your suggestion.
Aack, I have a bunch that need the URL put before my wordy description.
This is so true!! I haven't actually made any videos yet, however, I've recently been frustrated at watching some good videos on youtube, but not being able to find a way to go the person's blog. They didn't leave a link at all (or it was hard to find), so I couldn't get to their blog.
Yes, I've had the same problem, Laura. I think this is a win-win solution for all.
Hello Amy,
I have been on your site more than i have been on any site ever, you have this simple way of write that made me feel like i am reading a friends letter, i love this site so much, about blogging and traffic pages, they are really great.
Now i can improve on my website and great a YouTube video.
Thank so much for showing me HOW.
So glad it's been helpful, Grace.
Genius Amy! Going to edit that right away. Such a smart tip. Thank you.
Thanks Amy, I actually was not putting the whole link in my videos because I thought it wouldn't be allowed.
Obviously, I was mistaken. I guess it is time to go back and fix those videos!
A big long, clickable link is going to attract more attention than a short one. Thanks Amy, this is a great tip
I have thought about making a video or two, but I have to say, posting You Tube videos kind of makes me nervous for various reasons like the vulgarity of people's comments and the fact that You Tube isn't rated G or PG. Doesn't that translate into getting a whole bunch of traffic that you might NOT want?
I thought about Vimeo but every Vimeo video I watch doesn't work well and has lots of stalls.
Any suggestions?
You can turn off comments on YouTube and block people from voting on your videos, etc. I haven't had any trouble with unwanted visitors so far.
Thanks for the tip. I have put a link in maybe one of my videos. I need to go back in and add more to videos that have a post that goes along with it.
Thank you for the tip! It seems so simple but I never thought of it. I am going back to edit my videos!
Amy,
You always have amazing videos. Simple and to the point. Yet so full of great info!

Thanks, Allie. Glad they're helpful!
I haven't got any videos yet but sooner or later I will have to use You Tube for that, Great tip to know before testing the waters in the cyber-video department
Nancy
I'm enjoying this site! Thanks
Great idea! I just did one and now I need to find time to do the other 40. Sigh…Thanks, Amy!!
